What are monofocal lenses?
There are a number of different types of lenses that can be used to replace a natural lens.
Monofocal lens implants are the most basic type of lens used to correct vision after cataract lens replacement surgery. As the name suggests, these are fixed-focus lenses.
What are the limitations of monofocal lenses?
At one time, all lenses used after cataract removal surgery were monofocal lenses, and they remain a popular option for many cataract surgery patients.
These lenses provide very good vision after cataract surgery, but there is a drawback. They typically work only for distances, such as driving or household chores. Monofocals generally do not work well for close-up work, such as reading or using a computer screen. In fact, nearly two-thirds of patients electing monofocal lens replacement will need reading glasses or other vision assistance for some activities.
Is there another option?
Yes. New multifocal or Premium lens implants allow for more range of vision. Patients who elect this option usually do not need glasses for distance or reading. Dr. Kanner will be able to determine whether multifocal lenses are a better option for your unique vision needs.
